Disappointment is the Lot of Writers


One might say it's their own fault. They're chasing an (almost) impossible dream; a dream of earning a living while staying home in their pajamas and working at something they love. However, if they had their wits about them, and did even a little research, they would know that it's easier to get to heaven, notwithstanding the odds that many are called, but few are chosen, than getting published and/or making money as a writer. One in a thousand aspiring writers get offered a book deal, and then, only three or four years later, half of them are back on the street, with nine out of ten of them out of the business within a decade. And even with a contract, few of authors ever make a living from their writing. Things may be a little grimmer in indie publishing. Most of the traditionally published authors received some sort of an advance - money for their work - and occasionally, royalties. Indie publishers, on the other hand, need to finance their own books, which, if they are chumps, and sadly, many of them are, this can costs hundreds to thousands of dollars. Dollars they'll never likely to see again.

One could also say that it's the fault of their attitude as well, though I suppose one can't blame them for having it, since that attitude is very pervasive. That attitude being that the distinction between good, professional work, and bad, amateur work, is signaled by the price the product commands. In the case of authors, a professional author not only expects to be paid for their work, but actually expects to sell some books at the price they set. Amateurs, on the other hand are not good enough to charge for their work, so they should not expect to sell it. Thus, those who do not charge for their work, do so because it's not good enough to command anything more. I, of course, do not accept this definition, I have my own definition of being an amateur, so I can live the life of an amateur without misgivings. It has saved me from a lot of disappointment, and more than that, between sales and a lack of concern about sales, I've had fun writing all my life.

In addition, professionalism not withstanding, almost every writer I know believes that they are, in fact, due compensation for all the work, the creativity, and the artistic merit they've put into crafting their stories, as well as for the entertainment their work provides for readers. The flaw in this attitude is that, unless they have a publishing deal with a publisher, no one asked them to write their stories, and thus, no one owes them anything for doing it. If they're chumps enough to believe they can make money writing fiction, they have only themselves to blame if they don't. 

Of course, they can ask for money, and yes, it is fair to ask for some sort of compensation for the entertainment value their book provides. However, it will be total sales, not the price the writer values his work at, which determines the actual value of their effort as a commercial product in the marketplace.

This, the dollars, turns out to be one of the great sources of disappointment for artist of any sort with commercial ambitions. Indie publishing is a rotten business, one with astounding failure rates. Still, hope springs eternal. I've seen a chart that shows from 2020 to 2024 about 100,000 ebooks per month were uploaded to Amazon, but since then, the number has risen to over 300,000 ebooks per month, likely as a result of AI produced books. The readership, however, while avid, is not growing, so clearly, the overwhelming majority of ebooks will simply go unread, or if lucky, barely read, unless one already has a following of some sort. Thus, if an author choses to measure the value of their work in dollars - being a professional and all that - well, they're likely left with the mental gymnastics of convincing themselves that sales, or rather the lack of sales, is not, after all, the only yardstick of worth. There are other factors that can explain the lack of agreement between the professional nature of the product and its lack of sales.

And indeed, there are many, so it may be easy to reconcile commercial failure with artistic merit. Why, if no one ever comes across their book, how can its artistic worth be measured? But nevertheless, there is no denying that as a product it is, at least, a commercial failure, since money is the yardstick they automatically have adopted, as professionals, to measure success by. And so most books turn out to be... disappointments at some level.

For the life of my, I don't know why so many writers who are, with aforethought, producing a product to sell while looking (or not) at their oh, so very likely fate, stubbornly persist in choosing all but certain commercial failure and disappointment when they need not, if they would simply think outside the box.

Now, I should add here, that writing fiction is both an art and a commercial product. As a work of art, I can understand their attitude. As an artist, I felt that my best work was my most impressionist pieces, though even among people who like art enough to visit art galleries, in life and online, maybe only one or two in a hundred appreciated what I was doing. One of the reasons I stopped selling my art was that my more mundane, i.e. realistic, pieces sold better than my best work. It was discouraging that my so-so work was the stuff that was getting out into the world, but, alas, most people like realism. At least I didn't have to part ways with my best pieces. So I too, in a way, understand a writer standing by their work as art, even if it isn't a commercial success. But a book is so much more a commercial work than a painting is - it needs to be published and sold to be appreciated. Paintings can be sold as well, of course, but they just need to be viewed to be appreciated. 

Given all this, the questions I have for self publishing authors is this; does the fact that you ask for money, make you a professional writer? Does it take just one sale to validate this judgement?  Or do you need more? And if so, how many more sales are needed? How distinct is the line between professional and amateur?

I've been able to avoid disappointment as an amateur writer due to a mindset different than most writers. To begin with, I look upon ebooks differently than most. Because they are so ephemeral, merely insubstantial electronic files, I don't consider them really books at all. They're merely a medium that delivers a story. And because they can be endlessly duplicated at no cost, they have no economic value. Only the story they deliver has any value. And since I've been borrowing and reading books from a library all my life, I've never directly connected reading a story to buying a book. So it seems natural for me to offer my stories via a worthless medium for free. It costs me nothing to do so, and well, in my mind, reading a story is one of life's free entertainments.   

And then there is the fact that I like being an amateur writer. Because I enjoy the entire process of writing and publishing my work, I feel no need for anyone to pay me for doing it, so I ask no one to do so. I'm just having fun. By choosing to share, rather than sell my work, wherever possible, my work is much more easily accessible. And as a result, it has been read and enjoyed by a thousand readers, instead of only dozens which would've likely been the case if I had chosen to consider myself a "professional" and put a price on my work. I chose to measure artistic value without a dollar sign, and instead, use readership as my yardstick of success. I've never been disappointed by the results. And, as a bonus, I've enjoyed the freedom to write what I please, how I please. And, every once and a while, readers thank me for sharing my books for free, readers like Attie and Ruth.

My 2025 Cealanda House Publishing Report

 


2025 was a good year for Cealanda House Publishing. Sales volume was up - indeed, it proved to be a record calendar year. Revenue, however, was down from 2024, so I'm lucky that I don't have any stockholders to bamboozle. My business results can be explained by five factors. Let's breakdown them down. 

The first is the frequency of publication. My goal is to release one book a year. This year I released three books, likely a record. I'm working ahead... They were:

Glencrow Summer (a novel) in on 20 February. It has sold 1,972 copies in 11 months. It has proven to be a very good seller. Indeed sales have picked up since June.

The Darval-Mers Dossier (a novel) on 27 May. It has sold 1,336 copies in 8 months. Another very good seller. I consider a 1,000 copies in the first year to be one of my "best sellers".

The Founders' Tribunal (a novella) on 6 November. It has sold 590 copies in 2 months. It is doing just fine as well. As I said, it's been a good year.

New books bring new sales across the catalog. 

Releasing three books in one year is perhaps the key driving force behind my success as a publisher this year. Not only do new releases sell well, but they tend to bump up the sales of back catalog books as well, since new releases are promoted on most platforms. Every new release increase the chances of introducing your books to new readers, some of whom then go on to buy more of your books. Since the early days of self-publishing, releasing books rapidly has been the bog standard way to sell lots of books. 

Over time I've adopted a willingness to write and release shorter novels and novellas. I like writing shorter works with less elaborate plots. And since they take less time to write, I can get them to market sooner. That said, I write books as long as I have a story to tell, not to a given length. 

The second key factor in this year's success is the size of my back catalog of books.

I have 23 books for sale on Amazon and Kobe where I sell The Bright Black Sea and The Lost Star's Sea as a six book series rather than as a two volume omnibus. On all other platforms I offer 19 books for sale. The more books you have to offer, the more sales you can potentially make. The fact that I have been able to write and publish 16 novels and 3 novellas over the last fifteen years is paying off in sales, if not in revenue. But who cares about revenue?

The third key factor was my willingness to embrace auto-narrated audiobooks as soon as I was offered the opportunity to do so. 

This year 40% of my sales have come from audiobooks. This percentage is down from 44% last year. Recently ebooks have been outselling audiobooks by a good margin some months, but audiobooks have, over the years, taken up the slack as ebook sales have been harder and harder to come by.

The fourth, and on paper the driving force in my business, was getting my books into the Google Play store. I don't know why it works there, but as you will see below. It does, at least for me. Big time.

The fifth is price. I sell my books in a less competitive market; the free book market. Plus, it's a hard price to beat. And there is no friction for readers to give my books a try.

Right, so on to the numbers.

According to my vendors, I sold 22,269 copies in 2025. This is up from 14,970 in 2024 and handily beats my former record year of 2023, when I sold 18,198 copies.

Gross revenue however, was down about $50 from 2024 coming in at $307.13, all from sales on Amazon. I spend less that $100 for books and postage for my beta readers, so Cealanda House is still making a profit as a publisher; about $.01 a book thanks to doing nearly everything in house, with the help of some generous volunteer beta readers. A penny a book is razor thin margin, but we're still in the black and still in business after ten years, plus!

The bottom line is that this level of sales is due to releasing books frequently, having a substantial catalog, and selling my books competitively in all the market and formats available, and on Google.

However, these numbers should be viewed in their historical perspective. Ten years ago, in 2015 and for several years afterwards I was selling, on average, around 2,000 books per title per a year, on just Amazon and venues distributed by Smashwords - without audiobooks. In 2025 I am selling books at about half that rate, about 1,000 copies a book per year, but those sales include audiobooks that account for 40% of sales, and in additional stores. And I'd be selling 80% less books than I am, if it wasn't for the addition of Google as a vendor.

It's tough market.

The ebook market, especially on Amazon, has matured and consolidated. The casual ebook readers have likely returned to paper books as the newness of ebooks wore off. What remains are the very avid readers who read books of a specific genre or subgenre, and specific authors. I suspect that these readers account for the vast majority of ebook fiction sold/read. If your books fall outside of those mainstreams, and you don't spend money advertising, and hours a day on social media promoting yourself one way or another, the pickings are few, as my sales on Amazon clearly suggest.

The other factor to note is my dependence on Google for my sales. One would like to see a wider distribution of sales. Like many Amazon only authors, I have most of my eggs in one basket. But unlike most of Amazon only authors, who have no alternative market, I've taken every opportunity to reach every market. It just falls out that Google is my best choice, by far.

All that said, the bottom line is that these are just numbers. What I value is you, dear reader. Yes, the more the better, but in the end, I sincerely hope that I am entertaining readers like you, while at the same time, I am entertaining myself writing these stories. There'd be no numbers without you, and it wouldn't half as much fun. Thank you for making my day!

10 & 1/2 Years of Self Publishing, A Report


The first half of my 11th year as a publisher has been a remarkably good one. My best ever, in fact. The three keys have been 1.) a fairly substantial catalog of books, 2.) relatively frequent releases, and 3.) the elephant in the room: the Google Play Store.

1.) My back catalog now offers 19 to 23 books, depending on the the store. (In some stores, The Bright Black Sea and The Lost Star's Sea have been split into a six book series in order to offer them as audiobooks on Amazon.) 

Even 10 years later, The Bright Black Sea continues to be my best selling book. Between ebooks and audiobook versions it sold between 150 and 337 copies a month over the last six months. This illustrates that genre does matter, since space opera is one of the most popular SF sub-genre. Shadows of an Iron Kingdom is set in the same universe as The Bright Black Sea and it's usually my second most popular title. However, for some strange and unknown reason it outselling the first two books in that series. My best guess is that it has something to do with its title or the Gothic vibe of the story.

Depending on the month, most of my other books sell from 50 to 150+ copies between ebooks and audiobook editions, the bulk of them on Google. With twenty-odd books to sell, sales add up. Plus, as I've mentioned before, for every new reader you sell a book to, they may go on to read more of your books, ideally, all of them. In my case, a single new reader might account for 18 additional sales. 

2.) Since September 2024 up to this week's Nov 6th, 2025 release of The Founders' Tribunal, I have released two novels, and two novellas. I plan to release a third novella with a bonus short story, The Isle House Ghost and Nine Again, in February 2026 to continue this pace. New books generate a bump in monthly sales, not only on account of the sales of the newly released book, but in sales across the board, as new releases have their own less crowded selection on the ebook stores making it is briefly easier to reach new readers and remind past readers you're still around and writing. 

I am not racing to release books for the sales. I write because I enjoy writing every day. When I have shorter stories to tell, I can write more stories, which naturally leads to more releases.

3.) My sales on Google for both ebooks and audiobooks continue to dominate all the other venues combined. In any given month, most of my books on Draft2Digital, Kobo, and Amazon usually sell in only single digits, and many do not sell at all on Amazon. I sell 8x to 10x more books on Google than any other venue. The only way I can explain this is that people read books on their phones, and there are a lot of Android phones out there, with the Google Play Store as the default book store.

I'm going to keep this simple this time around. Here are the sales by month, venue, and book type for the period May 2025 thru Oct 2025.

The most interesting number in the data is that audiobooks only accounted for 37% of my sales so far this year, compared to 49.5% in my 10 year sales period (May 2024-April 2025) despite selling more total books this half. I have no clue as to why.

The bottom line is that I continue to sell at a midlist author's rate. Enough to keep me from getting discouraged. Of course, it is 100X easier to sell books at $0 than even $.99, so you can discount my sales as much as you care to. However, underselling your competitors is a Business 101 strategy. I sell most of my books at cost, and yet still make a tiny profit doing so, and have been doing that for more than 10 years now. I chose to value readership over pocket money, and laziness over hustling for sales. This low stress approach to writing and publishing has paid off; I'm still writing and publishing new books after 10 1/2 years in the business. Most authors, indie or trad can't say that.

My Tenth Year in Publishing - The Numbers

 


The mission of Celanda House is to publish the fiction of C. Litka as widely as possible - without having to work at doing so. Celanda House has no mandate to make money - It just can't lose money. To accomplish its stated mission within the assigned parameters, Celanda House, whenever possible, prices ebooks and audiobooks at cost. In most instances this is free. 

After ten years in business, how successful has Celanda House been in its mission of getting the works of C. Litka into the hands of the eager reading public? Below are the numbers.

My Thoughts On the Data 

Surprisingly my tenth year proved to be my second best in sales. In last year's yearly report I said that I hoped this year would be like last year, and, as it turned out, my sales exceeded last year by almost 2,500 copies. Revenue up $200 as well. It was a very good year. There is likely no secret reason for this; new releases, like the tide, raise the sale of all books. So with two new novels released this year both of which sold well, likely explains the better than expected sales.

The most important reading of the data above is that across all of my books, my back catalog books continue to sell at roughly the same rate as my newest titles. This would seem to suggest that I am attracting new readers every year, who then go on to read the stories I published before they discovered my books. Also it is interesting how relatively close in numbers most books are, with my space opera continuing to be my best seller, followed by its direct sequel and the four adventure/mysteries set in that same locale. Why the third book in the series, Shadows of an Iron Kingdom outsells all the other titles in that series is a mystery. There is a role playing game by the name of Iron Kingdoms which might explain it. Or readers simply like Gothic themed stories.

As I said in an earlier post, I think these sales are earned by the number of words I've written and number of books I've published. As well as the frequency of releases. More books, more often, more sales. Econ. 101. 

Audiobooks accounted for 49.5% of my sales this year. I suspect that audio books account for close to half of my Apple sales as well, since that 38% includes Smashwords, B & N et. al. Clearly, by adopting audiobooks, even auto-narrated ones, I have doubled my sales. Best publishing decision I made. And it was a no-brainer.

Google continues to dominate my sales. I think the reason is simple; young people use their smart phones as their computer, social media platform, and entertainment center. Offering my entertainment on phones via the Play Store, Apple Books, or on the Kindle App, as both text and voice is a doorway to the younger readers. As is making my work affordable to anyone who has a smart phone, i.e. just about everyone.

Looking Ahead

My next novel, The Darval-Mers Dossier, a 53K word mystery novel set in the same world as Chateau Clare and Glencrow Summer, is set to be released on 5 June 2025. Ideally I would like to release a second novel early in 2026, even though my stated goal is one novel a year. We'll see.

Earlier this year, I had toyed with the idea of making big changes after reaching the 100,000 sales mark and my 10th year. I considered going all in on Amazon and Kindle Unlimited for a year or two, just to see what I could do to capture the paying market. However, I sobered up and decided not to pursue that avenue. First, the sales of my books on Amazon and Kobe have inspired little confidence that I could sell enough books to justify spending the money I'd have to spend to get them in front of enough readers to have a chance of success. Together with the likelihood of losing most of that money, since my books are out of the mainstream of bestsellers I sighed and thought, no. And perhaps more importantly, I feel good about simply sharing my stories with readers. It just seems to feel right. I lose nothing by doing so and gain a pleasant felling of satisfaction by doing it. Plus, I like looking at my sales figures each month. Why turn fun into work? 

So, going forward, there may be new sales venues opening up this summer. I've seen reports suggesting that bookstore.org will be adding self-published books to their offering, somehow, which, if true would bear looking into. And I believe Kobo is in the early stages of some sort of audiobook move as well. Currently invite only. Otherwise, I'm staying the course. We'll see what the next year brings. Fingers crossed, something good.
